101 LOCAL GOVERNMENT

What Do Local Governments Do?

Local governments are the lowest level of government and Municipal (Local) councillors are the elected representatives closest to the people. Their role is not easy; it requires them to represent their electoral constituencies, provide a vision for development, and oversee public  finances.

Local governments are usually responsible for the following:

  • Arts and culture
  • By-law enforcement
  • Economic development
  • Fire services
  • Recreation & Parks
  • Planning new community developments and enhancing existing neighbourhoods
  • Public transit
